espectre

Motion sensing using Wi-Fi signal data on ESP32 chips, with an SDK, ESPHome and Matter support, and tools for managing devices. It suits DIY and smart home setups that need presence detection without cameras.

Overview

ESPectre turns an ESP32 into a local Wi-Fi motion sensor. When someone moves through a room, the Wi-Fi signal changes, and ESPectre reads those changes from channel state information to report motion. It needs no camera, microphone, wearable or radar hardware. The project offers ready-to-flash firmware, a C++ SDK, ESPHome and Matter frontends, browser tools and a command-line tool, and works with Home Assistant.

Key features

  • Motion detection from Wi-Fi channel state information on ESP32
  • Embeddable C++ SDK plus MicroPython implementation
  • ESPHome and Matter frontends, works with Home Assistant
  • Browser flashing tools and a host CLI
  • Open dataset and model weights

Best for

DIY and smart home users who want presence or motion detection without cameras, such as turning on lights when someone enters. Code is under GPLv3, with commercial licensing also offered.
