esp-sdr

Firmware that turns supported ESP32-family Wi-Fi radios into receive-only, low-duty-cycle SDRs for capturing and analyzing radio signals without separate SDR hardware.

Overview

ESP-SDR is firmware that uses an undocumented raw-sampling path in supported ESP32-family Wi-Fi radios to capture receive-only I/Q data, turning the chips into low-duty-cycle software-defined radios. It sends short sample bursts to a computer over USB or UART for analysis, and can compute spectra on the device. Users can inspect radio signals beyond decoded Wi-Fi packets with the project’s browser viewer and install firmware with its browser installer. ESP32-C5 reception includes the 5 GHz band.

Key features

  • Capture raw I/Q receive samples on supported ESP32 chips.
  • Send sample bursts to a computer over USB or UART.
  • Compute spectra on-device; selected chips also support continuous RF capture.
  • Use the browser SDR viewer and firmware installer.

Best for

Best for developers and radio hobbyists with a supported ESP32 board who want to capture or study RF signals without separate SDR hardware. Check chip and board requirements before installing.
