Overview
Rasterio is a Python library for reading and writing geospatial raster data, which is gridded data such as satellite imagery and elevation models stored in GeoTIFF and other formats. It sits on top of GDAL and exposes the data through a Python API based on N-D arrays, so it works naturally with NumPy. It also provides a command line interface. Official binary packages for Linux, macOS and Windows are published on PyPI.
Key features
- Reads and writes GeoTIFF and other raster formats
- Python API based on N-D arrays
- Built on GDAL with a command line interface
- Binary wheels for Linux, macOS and Windows on PyPI
Best for
Python users doing GIS or remote sensing work who want array-style access to raster files. Version 1.5 and later needs Python 3.12 or newer, NumPy 2 and GDAL 3.8 or newer.
