Overview

Carmen is a geocoder written in JavaScript that finds places and addresses using indexes stored as MBTiles with UTFGrid data. Instead of relying on a hosted service, you run the lookups yourself from Node.js code or through an example server that ships with the project. Each data source is configured as an index object, so the underlying data can be swapped. The default setup downloads about 1GB of tile indexes, and you call geocode with a text query such as a city name.

Key features

  • Geocodes place names and addresses from MBTiles based indexes
  • Data sources are swappable through per-index configuration
  • Index options include weight, tie-break sorting, token filter and output mapping
  • Includes an example geocoding server started with npm start

Best for

Developers who want to host their own geocoding with custom tile-based data. Note that the default install downloads about 1GB of indexes.
