Overview

OpenDisplay is a free, open-source macOS app that turns an iPhone, iPad or spare Mac into a real extended second display for your Mac. macOS treats the device as a separate monitor, not a mirror. It connects over USB or WiFi and supports touch input. It is presented as a self-hosted alternative to Apple Sidecar, Duet Display and Luna Display, with no account or dongle.

Key features

  • True display extension, with mirroring as an optional mode
  • USB connection or WiFi found automatically through Bonjour
  • Retina resolution matched to the device panel
  • Touch input: tap to click, drag and two-finger scroll
  • Spare Mac as a display through a small Receiver app

Best for

Mac users who want an extra screen from a device they already own without a subscription. USB needs a data-capable cable, and WiFi needs Local Network permission on both devices.
