Overview

OpenPencil is an open-source design editor and programmable toolkit for working with visual design files. It opens and writes native Figma (.fig) files and opens supported Pencil (.pen) documents, so users can continue working across formats. In the editor, users can ask connected AI services to create or change designs, build reusable components, and collaborate peer to peer. Its CLI can inspect, lint, convert, and extract design tokens from files, and export selected designs as JSX and Tailwind. It is available as a desktop app and web app.

Key features

  • Read and write native Figma .fig files and open supported Pencil .pen documents.
  • Use connected AI services to create or modify designs, and create reusable components and variants.
  • Use the CLI to inspect, lint, and convert files, extract design tokens, and export selections as JSX and Tailwind.
  • Collaborate in real time peer to peer, with cursors, presence, follow mode, and voice calls.

Best for

Designers who want an open-source editor for Figma and supported Pencil files, with AI-assisted editing and peer-to-peer collaboration. It also suits developers who want CLI tools for inspecting designs or exporting them into code workflows.
